MAYREE
MayRee brings an authentic taste of Thailand from Chef Orawan Sawangphol and a menu of creative cocktails from head bartender Sek Saraboon to the East Village. Chef Orawan grew up in a family of restaurant owners in Southern Thailand and she is excited to share a taste of her homeland with New Yorkers.
The restaurant is named for a female character in a Thai folktale tale called "The Twelve Sisters." MayRee was a kind-hearted and beautiful woman who lived very happily until a betrayal. In spite of her misfortune, she always maintained a cheerful disposition and as a result became associated with celebration and pleasure. Our cocktails are each named for one of the sisters in this story.

OUR CHEF
Chef / Owner Orawan Sawangphol was born and raised in Phang Nga, a small province in the south of Thailand about an hour drive from Phuket. A third generation restaurateur, she grew up in a family that has passed a restaurant on from generation to generation for more than 30 years. She started working in her family’s restaurant at age 13, learning about techniques and spices as well as recipes from her great grandmother, eventually becoming the restaurant’s chef. After studying hospitality, she moved to the U.S. and worked in California, Ohio and most recently as head chef in a restaurant in Illinois. MayRee is her first restaurant and Orawan wants to introduce the authentic Southern Thai food that she loves to cook to New York.
